Fertilizer Canada to join the Grain Growers of Canada on ‘Road to 2050’

November 3, 2022 (Ottawa, ON) – The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) are pleased to welcome Fertilizer Canada as an industry partner on the ‘Road to 2050’ climate solution initiative. Fertilizer Canada’s 4R Nutrient Stewardship has helped farmers optimize their fertilizer use to increase nutrient uptake and crop production while reducing environmental costs, which is a key pillar of the initiative.

“At Fertilizer Canada, we know it is not enough to talk about how we want the world to be; we have to take action to make that world a reality,” says Karen Proud, President and CEO of Fertilizer Canada. “Canada has an innovative, science-based fertilizer industry that has been helping producers reduce environmental impacts while maximizing economic outcomes for over a decade.”

Fertilizer Canada is the second industry partner to join GGC on the ‘Road to 2050’ – following the announcement of Corteva Agriscience last week.  With global food insecurity on the rise, Fertilizer Canada’s 4R Nutrient Stewardship (Right Source at the Right Rate, Right Time, and Right Place) aims to balance the need to grow more food with the impact of climate change by increasing agricultural productivity while mitigating impacts on the environment.

“Fertilizer Canada’s work on 4R Nutrient Stewardship has helped increase adoption of practical solutions to improve on-farm sustainability,” says Andre Harpe, GGC Chair. “Their passion for innovation has helped farmers achieve meaningful emissions reductions and promoted a vision for a prosperous future for our sector.”

Fertilizer Canada represents manufacturers, wholesalers and retail distributors of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulphur fertilizers and is vital to Canada’s agri-food economy. Canada’s fertilizer industry plays a significant role in mitigating climate change and has been proactively working to reduce on-farm emissions through the implementation of 4R Nutrient Stewardship.

“Canada’s fertilizer industry is well positioned to meet the sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow,” adds Proud. “This is an opportunity to develop a holistic path forward that will better enable Canada to meet its emission targets while at the same time supporting farmers. We look forward to collaborating with the Grain Growers of Canada on the Road to 2050′ initiative.”

The ‘Road to 2050’ will propose a path forward that identifies opportunities for the sector to continue reducing its GHG emissions. Recommendations will be made to guide government policies and programming directed at Canada’s grains sector.

“The ‘Road to 2050’ aims to leverage the innovation and best management practices farmers are already using,” says Harpe. “Fertilizer Canada has been a leader in this area, and this partnership will go a long way to make Canada’s agriculture sector even more sustainable. We look forward to working with Fertilizer Canada.”
